If We Are Witnessing the Decline of the Movement of Attacking Play, Let’s Enjoy Its Impact.

The Evolution of a Cult tends to be defined by specific steps.

1. The Grand Vision

A charismatic leader or coaches introduce a revolutionary approach offering a solution for struggling players.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to storm the compound overseas. The gunships are circling. Signs of trouble appear from the sidelines. A lone figure, exposed, nervous, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT written on his body as a symbol, has come staggering from the field and is taken aside with discretion towards an inconclusive loan stint at Derbyshire.

Remember the early days, when the world was still young? The days of Bazball 1.0, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Love-Bombing

Movement founders promise a new start, a brighter tomorrow, support, redemption among a group with shared faith in the big idea.

How did it feel back then? A team united basking in glory. Ink. Muscles. Determination. Peak performance vibes. Oh sure, The squad insist they don’t use the label, ironically as it’s denied, what did we see?

However, everyone understands the concept. It’s the player executing a stroke so depraved it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of the leader in his final form, an expression conveying: thoughtful warrior, rugged appearance, natural look, truly contemporary you half-expect to glance over and notice he’s fielding in the field bare-chested and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the opener often seen speaking publicly, appearing as a joyful figure smartly dressed, saying stuff like we are actively deconstructing the orange. And yes, the atmosphere, for a significant period, was entirely positive.

3. Expansion Period

Building period. Unity enforced via memorization of key phrases. These principles can appear contradictory as a loyalty check.

Is it just me? The criticism, the fury, the disappointment post-defeat feels overblown, overdone. England batted badly on the field, as is typical there. They were torn apart while bowling during a brief period as the bowling and captaincy fell apart, manipulated by the batsman batting like England but better, adaptive to conditions, an athlete shining with a kind of light around him.

And now we have this the criticism, the rage, the sense of English Test cricket as a disgrace. The consensus is that losing isn’t enough, they should be dismantled, to be scoured, destroyed, defeated via traditional methods of the bowler’s action, the low-fi orthodoxies of the bowler, seen enjoying his wickets with a bashful smile as if receiving a pleasant gift. What will this do to them?

4. External Conflict

Issues emerge from failures in the plan. However, faults are ignored. It begins to thrive on hostility externally.

In truth, approaching the upcoming game, we have now reached an intriguing moment in the journey of this movement. England could quite easily win in Brisbane through aggressive play. Alternatively, failure may follow. And if they do lose it appears we could be witnessing the decline.

Before that happens, a couple of points to consider about this. Previously, back in those heady early days, of passion and hope, an piece was published labeling it a movement. People were very angry, which proved the point as it’s known the best way of proving lack of cult status is when its acolytes send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages denying scrutiny of the beliefs.

The developments lately are equally notable. It seems that hating Bazball is now the trend. We have a uniformly angry internet, critical analysts, shots of angry middle-aged followers overseas missing out on play, reminiscent of investors demanding recourse.

Meanwhile, we have the wider backdrop of the host’s complex ingrained annoyance with the aggressive tourists, stating, the methods you value and have fostered and nurtured as one way of separating yourself from others, it’s not serious after all.

Here lies the truth. All movements are similar. Bazball was a cult as the game has its own culture. Or at least, the sport in England is closed, a group, an elite gathering, an insular community with a long history of ceremonial past supporting it. Historically, this was where entry is limited. It’s the colonial game of England, the original sports washers. And surprisingly, Britain is itself a cult, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a monarchy still exists.

The team have been enclosed in this system for years. In trying to escape from it, to create a less brutal environment, they are mirroring their own experience, forming a new circle, a limited community, but now with 15 cool guys and a leader promoting authenticity as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.

Live where your feet are. Embrace challenges. But no matter how fast and far you run, you’re always basically in the same place.

Reflecting on this, it might be appropriate to show understanding for the movement, to acknowledge its merits, which are significant. What is Bazball? Encouraging expression. Challenging orthodoxies. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
